Text Box: contribute to the future of the breed. Should our club be a success, we could choose to apply to become a Provisional National Association for Labradors. There is a lot to look forward to and to work toward!
Text Box: There is not a National Association or a Provisional National Association for Labradors in the UKC. You can think of a National Association like a ‘parent club’ for a breed. The National Association makes recommendations Text Box: to the UKC regarding the Standard for the breed, contributes to the BLOODLINES by submitting a breed specific article, conducts judges’ education concerning the breed. These are very important tasks that do Text Box: Thinking into the Future
Text Box: At the Hairless Rat Terrier Club Of America shows in Charlotte NC the weekend of Sept 12—14, 2003, a group of dedicated Labrador breeders, owners and enthusiasts decided to form a United Kennel Club affiliated specialty club for Labrador Retrievers. The sign up roster was passed around, and so began the first Labrador Specialty Club in UKC.
What happens next? The club needs a Board of Director and Officers, a constitution, application form, and a Code of Ethics. Then we submit these to UKC.
Pending approval by UKC, ULRA will conduct a Rules and Regulations Seminar with the UKC Field Representative. Text Box: That will familiarize us with the official requirements the club must meet.
Following that, we hope to set a date for our first UKC event.
Tentative Sites for Events:
Smiths property in Oak Ridge, NC
Andersons property in Galax VA for water related event
Checking on a dog training site (metal building w/1 acre parking) in Salisbury NC just off I-85
Idea is to have an indoor site like Salisbury for a Winter event. The Andersons mountain site would be used for an outdoor Summer event. The Smith’s Oak Ridge property would be used for Text Box: either a Fall or Spring event.
We need to price the Sportsman’s Insurance for the Club and the potential rental of the Salisbury or similar site before we set the dues amount.
Besides conformation, we’d also like to offer the CGC and the WC, and when UKC equivalents become available, those UKC certificate programs.
The Hunting Retriever (HR) clubs in our area can offer the Started Retriever test. We will need a liaison with them so we can attend, assist in and run our dogs in these UKC affiliated programs.
